Communication in Whitewater Rescue
Principles of Communication
- Good communication prevents misunderstandings.
- The two golden rules of guidance and communication are: "No sign, no action" and always showing the line away from the danger.
- Smoke signal communication is NOT a recognised form of communication in whitewater rescue.
- Recognised forms are: verbal communication, sign communication, and sound signal communication (whistle).
Whistle Signals
- A short whistle sound indicates Attention.
- 3 repeated whistle blows is the emergency signal used to get help from other guides (e.g., when a customer is entrapped with head underwater).
