Communication in Whitewater Rescue

Principles of Communication

  • Good communication prevents misunderstandings.
  • The two golden rules of guidance and communication are: "No sign, no action" and always showing the line away from the danger.
  • Smoke signal communication is NOT a recognised form of communication in whitewater rescue.
  • Recognised forms are: verbal communication, sign communication, and sound signal communication (whistle).

Whistle Signals

  • A short whistle sound indicates Attention.
  • 3 repeated whistle blows is the emergency signal used to get help from other guides (e.g., when a customer is entrapped with head underwater).
