Patient Position & Handover

Position by condition

  • SEMI-SITTING: breathing difficulty, chest pain
  • SEMI-SITTING leaning to injured side: chest injury
  • LYING with knees bent + head slightly raised: abdominal injury
  • LYING with slightly raised head: head injury (no spine concern), stroke
  • LEFT LATERAL: late pregnancy
  • FLAT ON BACK: shock from blood loss, severe injury (conscious)
  • RECOVERY POSITION: unconscious but breathing

Re-assessment cadence

  • Severe injury: ODDO + bleeding control every 5 min
  • Mild injury: every 15 min
  • After every move or new intervention

Handover to EMS

  • Initial findings + mechanism of injury
  • First aid measures already performed
  • Patient identity + SAMPLE history
  • Hand over splints/immobilisation gear
  • Help with transport to ambulance

After handover

  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Clean and disinfect equipment
  • Restock used materials
  • Prepare incident report
